Chairman's Column

Alcholic Life - Long Term Effects.
As well as the recognised immediate effects of drinking too much, like nausea/vomitting, binge drinking and prolonged heavy drinking over longer periods of time can affect you in many different ways.

Brain damage
Binge drinking can cause blackouts, memory loss and anxiety. Long-term drinking can result in permanent brain damage, serious mental health problems and alcohol dependence or alcoholism. For more information on the effects of alcohol on mental health click here. Young people's brains are particularly vulnerable because the brain is still developing during their teenage years. Alcohol can damage parts of the brain, affecting behaviour and the ability to learn and remember.

Cancers
Drinking alcohol is the second biggest risk factor for cancers of the mouth and throat (smoking being the first). People who develop cirrhosis of the liver (often caused by too much alcohol) can develop liver cancer. For more information on the effects of alcohol on women’s risk of breast cancer click here.

Heart and circulation
Alcohol can cause high blood pressure (hypertension) increasing the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It also weakens heart muscles, which can affect lungs, liver, brain and other body systems and can cause heart failure. Binge drinking and drinking heavily over longer periods can cause the heart to beat irregularly (arrhythmia) and has been linked to cases of sudden death.

Lungs
People who drink a lot of alcohol have more lung infections and can be more likely to get pneumonia and for their lungs to collapse. When a person vomits as a result of drinking alcohol they may choke if vomit gets sucked into their lungs.

Liver
Drinking too much alcohol initially causes fat deposits to develop in the liver. With continued excessive drinking the liver may become inflamed resulting in alcoholic hepatitis which can result in liver failure and death. Excessive alcohol can permanently scar and damage the liver resulting in liver cirrhosis and an increased risk of liver cancer. Women are particularly susceptible to the effects of alcohol on the liver, for more information click here.

Stomach
Drinking above recommended limits can lead to stomach ulcers, internal bleeding and cancer. Alcohol can cause the stomach to become inflamed (gastritis), which can prevent food from being absorbed and increase the risk of cancer.

Pancreas
Heavy or prolonged use of alcohol can cause inflammation of the pancreas, which can be very painful, causing vomiting, fever and weight loss, and can be fatal.

Intestine
Heavy drinking may result in ulcers and cancer of the colon. It also affects your body's ability to absorb nutrients and vitamins.

Kidneys
Heavy drinking can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure – a leading cause of chronic kidney disease.

Fertility
In men: impotence (lowered libido/sex drive) and infertility.
In women: infertility. Drinking alcohol when pregnant can seriously damage the development of the unborn baby. For more information on the effects of alcohol on fertility and pregnancy click here.

Bones
Alcohol interferes with the body's ability to absorb calcium. As a result, your bones become weak and thin (osteoporosis).

Weight gain
Alcohol is high in calories. Weight for weight, the alcohol in a drink contains almost as many calories as fat. The average bottle of wine contains 600 calories while four pints of average strength lager contains 640.

Skin
Alcohol dehydrates your body and your skin; it also widens blood vessels causing your skin to look red or blotchy.

Sexual health
Binge drinking makes you lose your inhibitions and affects your judgement. This might make you less likely to use a condom, increasing your risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia, HIV or hepatitis or result in an unplanned pregnancy.

Mental health
People may think alcohol helps them to cope with difficult situations and emotions, to reduce stress or relieve anxiety, but alcohol is in fact associated with a range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, risk-taking behaviour, personality disorders and schizophrenia.

Alcohol has also been linked to suicide. The Mental Health Foundation1 reports that:

65% of suicides have been linked to excessive drinking;
70% of men who kill themselves have drunk alcohol before doing so;
almost one third of suicides among young people take place while the person is intoxicated.

Excessive drinking can disrupt normal sleeping patterns resulting in insomnia and a lack of restful sleep which can contribute to stress and anxiety.

1Mental Health Foundation. Cheers! Understanding the relationship between alcohol and mental health. London: Mental Health Foundation, 2006.
Other effects
Alcohol affects the parts of your brain that control judgment, concentration, coordination, behaviour and emotions. If you are binge drinking, you may be at greater risk of:

becoming a victim of crime, eg rape, domestic violence, mugging or assault;
being involved in antisocial or criminal behaviour, eg fights, domestic violence, vandalism or theft;
having an accident, eg a road accident, fall, accident at work or accidental fire;
losing your job, eg repeated absence or poor performance. Think about the financial consequences;
damaging relationships with family or friends.

Thanks

Before advice, think for a few minutes.....click below for coconut effects

May Affect Sodium Levels

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a cup of fresh coconut water contains 252 mg of sodium. This is not a problem for most people, but anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease or any other condition that requires them to follow a low-sodium diet should be aware that coconut water is not the same as pure water and should be factored into their daily sodium allowance. On the other hand, it is the sodium content in coconut water that proponents believe makes it an ideal sports drink.

May Not Rehydrate Completely

Besides the sodium content, which is considered the most important electrolyte after sports because it comes out in your sweat, a cup of coconut water contains 600 mg of potassium and 60 mg of magnesium. A 1993 study in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" found that the exact mineral content of coconut water depends directly upon the degree of ripeness.

Differences in sodium and glucose content were marked at various ages, so the only way to guarantee that you're getting the electrolytes you assume you're getting is to know the exact age of the coconut. The study noted that at no time in the maturation timeline was the sodium and glucose content high enough to be considered an effective rehydration drink.

May Cause a Reaction

Coconuts are technically seeds and were traditionally allowed for people with tree nut allergies. In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reclassified the coconut as a tree nut, instantly sending allergy sufferers into confusion. The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network notes that some allergic reactions have been reported, but they generally involved people who didn't have a tree nut allergy. A few of them did coincide with tree nut allergies, however, so it is best to talk to your doctor if you are concerned about a potential reaction.

High in Sugar

Many people drink coconut water as an alternative to other juices, believing the mild taste indicates a low sugar content. That isn't true. A cup of coconut water contains 6.26 g of sugar, or about 1.5 tsp. If you drank all of the juice in a green coconut, you would be drinking 16.4 g of sugar, or about 4 tsp. of sugar. This is the same amount of sugar found in half a can of cola. Diabetics and others watching their sugar intake should be aware that coconut water must be factored into their daily sugar allowance.

Benefits of Drinking Alcohol - yes advantages of drinking

Benefits of Drinking Alcohol - yes advantages of drinking

Author : Akshay Marwah | on 21st Mar 2009
Benefits of Drinking Alcohol - yes advantages of drinking Benefits of Drinking Alcohol - yes advantages of drinking A MUST READ AS FROM NOW ON YOU WILL FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF HAVING A DRINK

David J. Hanson, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the State University of New York at Potsdam, is the expert on alcohol, and writes that moderate drinkers tend to have better health and live longer than those who are either abstainers .He cites research that shows that moderate drinkers:
* Have fewer heart attacks and strokes.
* Have lower incidence of hypertension, peripheral artery disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and the common cold.
* He also links moderate (sensible!) drinking to a lower risk for a myriad of other conditions, ranging from Parkinson’s disease to “poor physical condition in the elderly."

Some cardioprotective benefits have been demonstrated for light to moderate alcohol consumption (up to 1 drink daily for women and 1 or 2 drinks daily for men). Most studies have shown that light to moderate drinking is associated with risk reductions for CHD of approximately 30% to 35%.

Alcohol consumed in moderation seems to have an antiatherosclerotic effect, with decreased incidence of peripheral arterial disease Like exercise, alcohol consumption seems to be most cardioprotective when done daily and in moderation.

consumption of 1 drink daily by women and 1 or 2 drinks daily by men was associated with an 18% reduction in total mortality

Although low-dose, daily alcohol consumption has been linked to better health than less frequent use

Guidelines from the United Kingdom suggest that middle-aged or elderly men and postmenopausal women who drink seldom or never might consider the possibility that light drinking would benefit their health

The strongest medical evidence exists for the link between moderate drinking and a reduced risk of heart disease.

Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, an internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, was the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine study examining the roles of drinking patterns and heart disease that found, after 12 year of follow-up, that men who consumed alcohol between three and seven days a week had fewer heart attacks than men who drank once a week.

Evil Effects of Drinking Alchohol

Death.
Or if you are "lucky", addiction and brain damage.

Ethanol, the alcohol we find in alcoholic drinks is in fact a poison. It is not a particularly strong poison but never the less it is a poison. It makes the drinker intoxicated and light headed, both of which are pleasant feelings, and are the reasons most people drink. But some people become addicted to it and can't live without a regular drink. And usually quite a lot as well. They turn into a regular drunken bum. They drink rapidly to become drunk - a famous case was the fabulous soccer player George Best who appeared in a TV interview drunk. But he was sober and hadn't had a drink when the interviewer left him in the studio's recreation room to start the show. 15 minutes later Best was introduced and was clearly drunk. In just 15 minutes of rapid drinking!

Some stupid people have drinking competitions, to see who can drink the most, or to see who can drink a bottle of whisky or vodka the fastest. Unfortunately, the amount of ethanol in a full bottle is just about enough to kill you. And it regularly does.

The poison also kills brain cells and over a long period of time leads to brain damage.

The health benefits of milk can be achieved from milk directly or its products such as cheese, butter, curd, clarified butter or ghee, dairy whitener, ice cream, cottage cheese or paneer, flavored milk, milk sweets etc. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has clearly mentioned in its Dietary Guidelines to include milk and milk products in the diet.

Deficiency Symptoms: Milk deficiency can cause severe anemia, osteoporosis and other related illnesses. Milk consumption is very essential to maintain good health and doing normal activities. It is the best source of calcium for all age groups.

Benefits: Milk is extremely beneficial drink for mankind. Some of the advantages of drinking this life-giving nectar are as follows:

Calcium: Milk is the best source of calcium supply to our body. Calcium protects the body from major chronic ailments such as cancerous chemicals, bone loss, arthritic condition, migraine headaches, pre-menstrual syndrome, and obesity in children and aids in losing unwanted fats.
Healthy Bones: As mentioned above, milk is rich in calcium, which is very essential for growth and proper development of strong bone structure. Bone disorders such as osteoporosis can be prevented with daily intake of adequate quantity of milk. Children deprived of cow milk have an increased chance of bone fractures when injured.
Healthy Teeth: Encouraging children and youngsters to drink milk would give them excellent dental health, as milk protects the enamel surface against acidic substances. Drinking milk for energy and health would dissuade children from consuming soft drinks, thus reducing the risk of decayed teeth and weak gums.
Rehydration: Fluids are an integral part of human body. The body needs to be replenished with liquids at regular intervals. It is very essential for growing children and they must drink at least six to eight glasses of fluid every day. Milk contains a good quantity of water molecules and is considered the best fluid for rehydration.
Skin Care: Have you heard of Cleopatra, the Queen of Nile? She was considered one of the most beautiful women of all times. Well you will be surprised if I tell you that Cleopatra used to have a milk bath daily! She used to mix honey and milk and take a bath daily enabling her maintain soft and beautiful skin. Since thousands of years, milk is known to benefit our skin by helping us maintain a fair and smooth complextion. Hence, even today milk and milk products are used in a number of cosmetic preparations. Milk is also good for dry skin. If you have a dry skin apply milk on your face (and other body parts), leave it for about 15 minutes and then wash it. The milk solids nourish and smoothen your skin. The lactic acid present in milk is known to aid in removing the dead skin cells, thereby rejuvenating your skin.
Improving Diet and Vitamin Intake: According to medical research, drinking milk considerably improves our intakes of vital minerals and vitamins. A man who consumes a carton of whole milk doubles his chances of fulfilling calcium requirement per day, whereas, another person consuming a can of fizzy or carbonated drink may in reality lower his calcium levels by one third percent.
Acidity Reduction: Consumption of milk products can also help in reducing acidity
Wholesome Food: It contains a whole lot of vitamins and minerals to keep you fit, healthy and strong. A glassful of milk contains vitamin A & B for good eyesight and increasing RBC count, carbohydrates for vitality and energy, potassium for proper nerve function, magnesium for muscular function, phosphorous for energy release, protein for body repair and growth.

Why India is Still a Developing Country????

An Old Story:

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The Grasshopper thinks the Ant is a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.

Come winter, the Ant is warm and well fed. The Grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

Indian Version:

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The Grasshopper thinks the Ant's a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering Grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the Ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

NDTV, BBC, CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering Grasshopper next to a video of the Ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

The World is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this poor Grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Arundhati Roy stages a demonstration in front of the Ant's house.

Medha Patkar goes on a fast along with other Grasshoppers demanding that Grasshoppers be relocated to warmer climates during winter .

Mayawati states this as `injustice' done on Minorities.

Amnesty International and Koffi Annan criticize the Indian Government for not upholding the fundamental rights of the Grasshopper.

The Internet is flooded with online petitions seeking support to the Grasshopper (many promising Heaven and Everlasting Peace for prompt support as against the wrath of God for non-compliance) .

Opposition MPs stage a walkout. Left parties call for 'Bengal Bandh' in West Bengal and Kerala demanding a Judicial Enquiry.

CPM in Kerala immediately passes a law preventing Ants from working hard in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty among Ants and Grasshoppers.

Lalu Prasad allocates one free coach to Grasshoppers on all Indian Railway Trains, aptly named as the 'Grasshopper Rath'.

Finally, the Judicial Committee drafts the ' Prevention of Terrorism Against Grasshoppers Act' [POTAGA], with effect from the beginning of the winter.

Arjun Singh makes 'Special Reservation ' for Grasshoppers in Educational Institutions & in Government Services.

The Ant is fined for failing to comply with POTAGA and having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes,it's home is confiscated by the Government and handed over to the Grasshopper in a ceremony covered by NDTV.

Arundhati Roy calls it ' A Triumph of Justice'.

Lalu calls it 'Socialistic Justice '.

CPM calls it the ' Revolutionary Resurgence of the Downtrodden '

Koffi Annan invites the Grasshopper to address the UN General Assembly.

Many years later...

The Ant has since migrated to the US set up a multi-billion dollar company in Silicon Valley,

100s of Grasshoppers still die of starvation despite reservation somewhere in India,

..AND

As a result of loosing lot of hard working Ants and feeding the grasshoppers,

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

India is still a developing country !!!

Endosulfan - The Threat of the Millenium

Endosulfan is an off-patent organochlorine insecticide and acaricide. This colourless solid has emerged as a highly controversial agrichemicaldue to its acute toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation, and role as an endocrine disruptor. It is banned in more than 63 countries, including the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, and other Asian and West African nations, and being phased out in the United States,Brazil and Canada. It is still used extensively in many other countries including India and China. It is produced by Bayer CropScience, Makhteshim Agan, and Government-of-India–owned Hindustan Insecticides Limited among others. Because of its threats to the environment, a global ban on the use and manufacture of endosulfan is being considered under the Stockholm Convention.
